Netflix may have inspired me to write this article. And yes, I’ve only been in winter, but the island stole my heart so thoroughly that I have been planning my spring-summer-fall “self-reflection” tour there. So, Jeju, I’m coming for you.
While the HDI comparison might have sparked a debate, it’s clear that Mindanao is more than just a development statistic. It’s a region of breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and endless adventure. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or a foodie, Mindanao has something for everyone.
Perhaps this article is my modest attempt to bridge the gap, to remind us that, while it is right to disagree, it is equally essential to find common ground. After all, the Philippines is more than simply an actual spot; it also represents a shared nation and belonging. And if we can't find a way to appreciate and understand one another, how can the rest of the world perceive our best qualities?
This trip was everything I needed to kick off 2025—snowy villages, ski slopes, and a tropical escape all rolled into one. Snow Town was a dream come true, skiing in Seoul was a blast, and Bangkok reminded me why I love turning work trips into adventures. If there’s one thing this trip taught me, it’s that I need to keep chasing these experiences. Winter, summer, work, or play... There’s always more to explore.
I'm choosing to embrace the trip and each turn of things in the meantime. Indeed, visa applications can be a test of patience, a regulatory maze meant to test our abilities for planning. However, they also provide a great lesson in persistence and a reminder that sometimes the most fulfilling experiences call for some extra work. And let's be honest: the excitement, the build-up, the knowing that we have conquered those difficulties makes the final arrival at our destination all the sweeter.
Don't get me wrong, I know life throws some serious curveballs. Some of you might be reading this thinking, "Travel? Dude, I just survived the year from hell!"... And to that, I say, you're amazing! Each of us faces unique challenges, and often, simply making it through the day is a significant accomplishment. For me, I was also faced with the challenge of losing one of the most important people in my life this year. But even amidst the chaos, I believe there's always a little space for wanderlust, even if it's just dreaming of that future getaway while you're waiting for the bus.

“Have you experienced a love story in the Philippines? Share your story and inspire others to discover their own.” Suddenly, I felt that I wasn’t just watching a tourism campaign. I was witnessing a collection of stories unfolding against the backdrop of my home country. The video made me realize that the Philippines isn’t just a destination but a catalyst for connection, adventure, and love. Then I thought, Why not take part in that narrative? Hence, this feature.
“Cruise to Nowhere” was a bittersweet experience. Although there may no longer be one active today since leisure travel has recovered to its pre-pandemic trend, it was indeed a reminder of what we had almost lost as well as a symbol of hope for what could be.
