How We Spent a Night in China’s Winter Wonderland (Without a Tour)
Thank you for visiting! And before you read through, don't forget to subscribe!

Okay, this post exists because so many of you asked for it. 😅
After sharing our Harbin winter adventure on YouTube and Instagram, I saw comments, and my DMs were flooded with one question:
“Can you share your Snow Town itinerary?”
And because we love you (and because typing the same reply 47 times is… character-building), we’ve officially turned our vlog into a blog itinerary. So here it is.
This blog post is an exclusive breakdown of our DIY Snow Town itinerary… How we traveled from Harbin, what we did, where we stayed, and how much we roughly spent. No tour packages involved, no private drivers, no luxury shortcuts. Just pure winter chaos… and a lot of snow.
Important note before we begin:
This is only one part of our entire Harbin trip. If you’re looking for Volga Manor, downtown Harbin, or the Ice & Snow Festival, I may cover them in separate posts. This guide focuses solely on Snow Town (Xuexiang) and how to do it independently.
If you prefer convenience over planning, tour packages to Snow Town are still an excellent option. They save time, energy, and a lot of mental gymnastics. But if you’re like us… curious, adventurous, and slightly allergic to overpriced tours, this DIY route is 100% possible.
So whether you’re planning a Harbin winter trip, wondering how to visit China Snow Town without a tour, or just daydreaming about wooden houses buried in snow, hotpot at -30°C, and questionable vodka decisions, this guide is for you.
Let’s break it down step by step, starting with how to get from Harbin to Snow Town (Xuexiang).
🗺️ Harbin → Snow Town DIY Itinerary (Overnight Trip)
DAY 1: Harbin to Snow Town + Night Activities
⏰ Morning: Travel from Harbin to Snow Town
The option we took is the most common DIY route… The earlier the better, so make sure to catch the trains that leave before 8 AM. You can purchase your train tickets via Alipay or WeChat Mini Program the night before. Purchase your tickets online to avoid the hassle of getting to the train departure stations.
Harbin → Yabuli West → Snow Town
1️⃣ Harbin to Yabuli West (Train)
- ⏱ Travel time: ~2.5–3 hours
- 💰 Cost: RMB 50–120 (depending on seat type)
- 🚄 High-speed or regular trains available
- 📍 Departure: Harbin Railway Station or Harbin West
👉 Why Yabuli West?
It’s the most convenient transit hub for Snow Town and very DIY-friendly. Bus schedules are consistent, but please take the morning departures to maximize your afternoon time in Snow Town.
2️⃣ Yabuli West to Snow Town (Bus/Minivan)
- ⏱ Travel time: ~2.5–3 hours
- 💰 Cost: RMB 60–100
- ❄️ Expect snowy mountain roads and scenic views
⚠️ Disclaimer:
This part is slow, bumpy, and cold, but it’s fun if you treat it as part of the adventure.

🏡 Afternoon: Check-in & Explore Snow Town
- Check into your local guesthouse (most are wooden homes run by locals)
- Drop your bags, layer up (Trust me when I tell you this), and head out
Things to do immediately:
- Walk around the main Snow Town street
- Take photos of snow-covered rooftops (yes, they’re THAT fluffy)
- Rent winter gear if you underestimated the cold (we all do)
💰 Guesthouse cost (overnight):
- RMB 300–600 per room (winter peak season)
- We stayed at this guesthouse, Zhoudajieminsu, because its location is ideal. It is not far from the tourist drop-off/pick-up point and is near most of the landmarks around Snow Town.
🌌 Evening: Snow Town Night Experience (THE HIGHLIGHT)
This is where Snow Town becomes magical.
Must-do night activities:
- ❄️ Night walk with glowing lanterns
- 🛷 Snow sledding & tubing
- 🔥 Bonfire areas
- 🍢 Street food hopping
- 🥃 Vodka shots (optional… but recommended for warmth 😅)
Food to try:
- Dumplings
- Hotpot
- Grilled skewers
- Roasted sweet potatoes (elite winter snack)
💰 Dinner + snacks: RMB 50–100
💰 Activities: RMB 30–100 (depends on what you try)
📸 Pro tip:
Snow Town is best photographed at night when the lights are on… It’s pure winter fairytale vibes.

DAY 2: Snow Town Morning + Return to Harbin
🌄 Early Morning: Snow Town Without the Crowds
Wake up early for sunrise. If you’ll have a terrible hangover because of the vodka, please try! Waking up early is non-negotiable.
- Snow Town mornings are quiet, soft, and unreal
- Fewer tourists
- Fresh snow
- Best time for cinematic shots
Spend time:
- Walking the village paths
- Taking photos of rooftops
- Just soaking it all in
🚍 Late Morning: Return Journey
- Snow Town → Yabuli West (bus/minivan)
- Yabuli West → Harbin (train)
⏱ Total travel time back: ~5–6 hours
💰 Return transport cost: RMB 110–220
You’ll return to Harbin tired, frozen… but very happy.
💸 Estimated DIY Budget (Per Person)
| Item | Cost (RMB) |
|---|---|
| Train (Harbin ↔ Yabuli West) | 100–240 |
| Bus (Yabuli West ↔ Snow Town) | 120–200 |
| Guesthouse (1 night) | 300–600 |
| Food + Activities | 100–200 |
| Total | ~620–1,200 RMB |
👉 Yes, this is still cheaper than most Snow Town tour packages.
Final Thoughts (Good Vibes Ending)
Is Snow Town touristy? Yes, definitely. Is it crowded during peak winter? Of course! So, is it still worth it? Absolutely!
Doing a Snow Town DIY takes effort, but it offers flexibility, savings, and a stronger sense of adventure. If you’ve been dreaming of a China winter itinerary, this is one experience that truly feels like stepping into a snow globe.
And remember, this is just one part of our Harbin trip. More winter magic coming soon!
Now, is this itinerary perfect? Well, probably not. But is it feasible, budget-friendlier, and totally for DIY travelers? Absolutely, yes again! Tap the like button if you agree!
