Why is it still a must-visit Destination?

A recent comment by a Filipino political analyst comparing Mindanao’s Human Development Index (HDI) to that of “Sub-Saharan” Africa sparked a heated debate. However, as a Pinoy who grew up in Mindanao, I want to say that despite some gaps in its development, it is more than just a statistic.
Disclaimer: I am promoting a travel blog; hence, this article focuses on Mindanao as a colorful, culturally rich region, featuring some of the Philippines’ most breathtaking places. For me, it is not only a place to research; it boasts tourism.
So, pack up your bags and be amazed as I take you on a tour of why this region should be on your travel bucket list.
1. The natural beauty of Mindanao will make you speechless
The scenery in Mindanao is unparalleled, so don’t bother with HDI charts. Siargao’s clear turquoise waters and Mount Apo’s towering peaks make this region an ideal destination for nature lovers.
Must-Visit Spots:
Siargao: Aside from being known as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”, it also has beautiful beaches, lagoons, and the well-known Cloud 9 surf break.
The “Island Born of Fire,” Camiguin has waterfalls and hot springs and boasts its famous Sunken Cemetery.

Mount Apo rests high in Mindanao. It is the country’s highest peak and an excellent spot for hiking and discovering wildlife.
2. Rich History and Culture
Mindanao is a mix of different cultures because it is home to both the Lumad groups and the Bangsamoro people. Its festivals, traditions, and heritage sites offer a glimpse into the Philippines’ diverse cultural tapestry.
Must-Experience:
The Kadayawan Festival in Davao is a vibrant celebration of Mindanao’s harvest and culture. Floral floats and street dances showcase the different interpretations of resiliency and thanksgiving.

The Great Mosque of Cotabato is a beautiful piece of architecture that reminds us of the region’s Islamic history.
3. Get ready for an Adventure
Mindanao has plenty of exciting things for people who need an adrenaline rush, like white-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro and diving into the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (via Sulu).
Must-Try Activities:
Known as the “White-Water Rafting Capital of the Philippines,” you can jump off to Cagayan de Oro, and experience the thrill of a few natural ‘washing machines’ in the river rafting adventure.
But if you are a marine life enthusiast, you can dive into the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tubbataha Reefs.
4. Warm Hospitality and Delicious Food
Mindanaoans are known for being friendly and open. Our cuisine is also a flavor explosion you won’t want to miss.
Must-Try Food:
Durian: Davao’s infamous “king of fruits” is a love-it-or-hate-it experience.
Sinuglaw is a famous dish in Davao that uniquely combines grilled pork and ceviche.
Not to mention, Gensan’s tuna catch is of export quality.
5. Making Progress and Being Strong
Mindanao has challenges with development, but it’s also a great place to call home. Peace initiatives like the Bangsamoro Organic Law are making growth possible; thus, tourism is really taking off.
Fact: The Department of Tourism says that the number of tourists coming to Mindanao rose by 20% in 2022.
The trip to Mindanao is worth it.
So, while the HDI comparison might have sparked a debate, it’s clear that Mindanao is more than just a development statistic. It’s a region of breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and endless adventure. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or a foodie, Mindanao has something for everyone.
So, what are you waiting for? Book that trip, and see for yourself why Mindanao is a destination like no other.
