Whenever I am alone in my room, I can’t help but be drawn to reflections. And as my birthday month, September, comes to an end, I reflect on the experiences that have shaped me. This year is a bit special because it will be my last year of telling people that I’m 30-something (Age Hint: Now, you know!). It’s not just the usual birthday memories flooding my social media feed that have captured my attention. A particular adventure, “Cruise-to-Nowhere” during the height of the COVID-19 travel restrictions, has popped up and ignited my nostalgia.

This adventure holds a deeper significance for me. It was also during this time that I was focused on my fitness journey. I was motivated back then. Lately, my energy has waned a bit, and I know revisiting these memories has served as a much-needed reminder of what I can achieve.
So, as this month ends, I am committing my reflections not just to travel, but also to the power of setting goals and embracing a healthy lifestyle. And I’m sharing this story to kick things off—a unique cruise adventure, filled with unexpected joys, laughter, and a renewed sense of ‘possibility.’

The travel dilemmas we faced during the COVID-19 pandemic were complex and often disappointing. Plans were cancelled, dreams were deferred, and the world seemed to shrink. Yet, amidst the frustration and sadness, we all saw a glimmer of optimism.

I would say, the “Cruise to Nowhere” was a testament to our resilience. While traditional travel was limited, people sought creative ways to satisfy their wanderlust. The adventure, though ‘confined’ to the open sea, offered a brief escape from the constraints brought by the pandemic, a chance to experience the simple pleasures of travel while keeping safe and mindful. This adventure was a 3-nights-2-days adventure via Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Sea. Prior to COVID-19, it had several cruises across Asia Pacific, Europe, and North America. However, when travel became restricted, the ship’s port has remained only in Singapore. Despite that, the Cruise-to-Nowhere has become popular amongst Singapore residents. This was, actually, my second time.

So, talking about our whole experience with Quantum of the Seas, our time onboard was really all about embracing the “slow travel” philosophy. The ship offered a lot of activities like the bumper car ride, FlowRider surfing simulator, and more, but we skipped all of them. Instead, we just explored the ship, went for some snacks and drinks in complimentary restaurants, and basked in the rareness of just being out and about.
We booked for their shows and killed our time joining their games. Despite the choice, we still enjoyed the whole thing. For me, the highlight was undoubtedly the variety show, “Sequins and Feathers.” I’m not sure if they’re still performing this now, but it was like a mini-Vegas extravaganza right there on the high seas! The colourful costumes, the music, the sheer energy—it was a much-needed reminder of the vitality and excitement the world had to offer. Kudos to all the performers and technical crew!

“Cruise to Nowhere” was a bittersweet experience. Although there may no longer be one active today since leisure travel has recovered to its pre-pandemic trend, it was indeed a reminder of what we had almost lost as well as a symbol of hope for what could be. We learned to adapt, to find joy in the unexpected, and to cherish the moments of connection and adventure, no matter how short-lived they could be.
Working in a company that offers travel services, back then, I saw the yearning to venture out again, create new memories, and embrace beauty and diversity. Fast-forward to 2024… Travel has almost bounced back, albeit with protocols and precautions, and while the scars of the past remain, there’s a renewed sense of hope and enthusiasm.
This month always reminds me that life is a journey filled with triumphs and challenges. It’s a time to positively celebrate the past, navigate the present, and look to the future. Indeed, travel has changed, but our world of adventure remains sunny. Like the “Cruise-to-Nowhere,” we found ways to create joy, connections, and unforgettable experiences even amid limitations. So, as I blew out the candles on my cake this year, I wished for brighter days ahead, filled with exciting new journeys and a welcoming world.
