I am not a Formula 1 Grand Prix fanatic, and fast cars going around in laps is not really my thing. But when I got invited to the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix practice session with a Paddock Club pass, I would say that perks are perks, and fancy is fancy. So I put on my most bewildered smile and dove headfirst into the world of high-octane glamour, secretly hoping for a selfie with McLaren’s Charles Leclerc.

Five years ago, I had dipped my toes in the F1 Night Race waters. It was fun, don’t get me wrong, but let’s just say it involved more squinting at the track from a distance with no champagne flutes. Though I got the chance to party with Gwen Stefani and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers back then.
This year? Oh, this year’s different. It could say it was indeed an upgrade.

Walking into the Paddock Club was like stepping into a luxurious party, where “Vegas meets motorsports (without the casino).” The atmosphere was crackled with energy, with lights dancing with the grove of the music and a giant digital screen flashing F1 features and live feeds. People in business casual attire mingled while “Showgirls,” complete with elaborate costumes and infectious smiles, added a touch of whimsy to the high-class affair.

What really hit upon me was the Pit Lane Walk. It was an interesting activity for Paddock club pass holders. Actually, I had visions of casual chats with Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen, maybe even snagging an autograph or two, but there’s no F1 drivers in sight. Too bad!
Also, while my pass grants access to the Paddock Club, we’re restricted to come nearer the pit stop and kept us at a bit of a distance from the cars. Still, it made me admire the glam that this sport offers and its being prime and costly. This experience is something to write on. As I mentioned, I am not a fan of Formula 1 and I wouldn’t spend much for this kind of access, but tonight is a far cry from my previous experience, where even getting a glimpse of the race cars felt like winning the raffle draw.

Not to mention, our Paddock Club pass also included access to a sumptuous dinner buffet at the Claymore Suite. With a clear view of the racetrack from the balcony, I enjoyed a few glasses of booze while watching the cars whiz by. The combination of gourmet food and the thrill of the race was simply unbeatable. I even got the chance to catch up with my colleagues whom I only had worked with over conference calls.

—So, if you’re going to ask me if I somehow became more interested with the sport, I can’t say I did. I still get confused about which car is which and which constructors do contest in Formula 1. But this experience was unforgettable. The energy, the access, the sheer spectacle of it all – it’s something everyone should witness at least once. Who knows, I may be watching a full race out of the Singapore Grand Prix someday. Just don’t ask me to explain the rules or point out any drivers besides the ones I mentioned here.
