And just as I was scrolling through social media recently, I stumbled upon a post listing the cities in Southeast Asia with the highest Crime Index in 2024. My heart sank as I read through it, not because I was surprised by the rankings but because Manila, one of my beloved cities (the city I called home for nearly seven years) was featured prominently again.

I’ve always wanted to highlight Manila’s vibrant culture, exciting nightlife, and the warmth of its people. However, the reality is that the city’s many attractions are overshadowed by safety concerns. Tourists may be reluctant to visit, and residents may feel uneasy in their own communities.

I find it quite upsetting that Manila, a city with so much promise, is dealing with such a serious issue. Before moving overseas for work, I had happy memories there, visiting its local and historical sights, enjoying delectable food almost everywhere, and creating lifelong friendships. I am personally aware of Manila’s abundance of offerings, but the current state of safety poses a serious threat to the city’s growth and development.

I still occasionally travel back to see my friends. And though I cherish these visits, I admit that I also can’t help but feel the constant sense of anxiety whenever I go (to places where may or may not be familiar to me). I’m constantly aware of my surroundings, hesitant to go out alone at night. I may sound overreacting but I am always alert against potential threat, when I’m there.

I really couldn’t help but compare. It’s a stark contrast to the carefree days I have here in the current city that I live in to. In Singapore, I’d feel the sense of belonging and security.

I am still optimistic. I am hopeful… I dream that one day, the government and the people of Manila will be able to work together to resolve the underlying reasons of those unsafe incidences (crimes) and establish a safer environment for everyone. I envision a future where I can proudly promote Manila as not only a dynamic and interesting city but also a safe and welcoming one.

I always go back to Manila, no matter what, because I enjoy doing a lot of things there. But I dream of the day when I can roam any streets without fear, explore some hidden nooks without thinking twice, and experience the city’s lively energy without worry.

I believe that Manila has the potential to be one of the safest cities in the world… Because the people are determined, resourceful and most importantly, enthusiastic about their city. With the right leadership and teamwork, I am confident that Manila can overcome its challenges and become an outstanding example of safety and security. Until then, I will keep sharing my love for Manila with the world, while acknowledging its current reality. I would still want to promote the city to you, my fellow travelers, but I encourage you to take caution and exercise vigilance. Manila is a city with a rich history and an undying optimism. It was my home away from home and I haven’t given up on it. I’m still rooting for its success because I believe in its potential.
